Shizuoka Translation Contest

When I don't have anything else to do I try to work on my entry for The Shizuoka International Translation Competion. The deadline is December 10, 2004, and the grand prize is ¥1,000,000 and a year of study at a university in Shizuoka. There are also ¥300,000 and ¥100,000 prizes. Pretty nice. I don't think I'll win, but anyway it's something to do.

Hamster bite update: it's healing but the skin around the bite feels kind of numb, as if all the nerve endings are dead. The bite marks are still visible and look purple around the edges. Must be the HAMSTER VENOM.

You're in that too? Which ones are you doing? For literary fiction I've chosen the article about Confucius, but I can't decide on a fiction piece.

I'm doing 科学と知的好奇心。 For the fiction I was originally thinking ある心の風景, and I even read Kajii Motojiro's "Lemon" as background research, but now I'm thinking Hashiriame might be more interesting. Hashiriame looks like the most exciting one of the three, but it's also the longest.
What made you choose the Confucius essay? How much have you done so far? I have only done 4-1/2 paragraphs...

I happen to know a little about Confucius, plus I already had a parallel Chinese-Japanese edition of 論語 in paperback. That's the only real reason.

As for the fiction -- I dig Kajii too (I got the Daisou edition of his most famous works, ha) but I was unsure if I could get the nuances of his moodiness right... and Hashiriame I enjoyed reading but I didn't want to deal with trying to render fake period street talk into English. It's not that I love Summer Blanket so much as that I think I can put it into English most accurately.

(Oh yeah, so you probably guessed, I finally did settle on Summer Blanket since I wrote my first comment. Your blog reminded me that I really have to get into gear on that. I haven't done much actual writing on either piece though-- I'm trying to finish the goddamn Ten Nights of Dreams first..)

I translated "Aru kokoro no fukei". It was interesting to read such a thing about Kyoto.
Also I translated article about science. It was very difficult for me. I don't think I can win. Did anyone translated this article?

Good for you! I started both of the ones you mentioned, but couldn't keep my motivation up long enough to finish them. I don't think I will enter this year, after all. You might win, you never know. Good luck!
